LAST® Armor, a division of Foster-Miller, makes a unique add-on armor appliqué system for light armored personnel carriers that installs without any cutting, welding or drilling on the base vehicle. LAST® tactical vehicle armor kits can be sent forward to deployed vehicles and the simple installation can be performed by the vehicle crew itself. Pictured (right) are Canadian Army personnel installing LAST® Armor kits on the docks in Split, Croatia.
The basic tactical vehicle armor system upgrades protection levels from typical 7.62 mm ball to .50 Cal./12.7 mm and 14.5 mm API as well as offers protection from conventional overhead threats such as 155mm/152mm fragmenting artillery air bursts and mortar fire. It adds about 47 kg per square meter (10 lbs. per square foot) of armored area.
LAST Aircraft Armor Kits
Aircraft armor kits designed and manufactured by LAST® Armor are based on the same simplified logistics support philosophy as the armor kits for land vehicles. There are no aircraft modifications necessary to install LAST® aircraft armor kits and the kits are logistically completely self-contained. They can be installed in forward austere locations if necessary by the aircraft flight crew using only the materials provided in the kit. The complete add-on armor system can be transferred from one aircraft to another within one hour. Further, LAST® Armor kits built for the Lockheed C-130 use the exact same armor parts as kits built for the Lockheed C-141 and McDonnell Douglas C17 (shown here) as well as various rotary wing/vertical lift aircraft such as the H-60 and Bell 212.
The aircraft armor kits can be designed to provide protection against any reasonable threat; however the most common protection level is small arms up to and including 7.62 mm AP and steel core ball rounds such as the 7.62 mm x 54R, LPS. The areal density of the system is approximately 37 kg per square meter (8 lb. per square foot). Last® Armor products meet all the following Federal Aviation Administration Flammability/Heat Release/Toxicity requirements: FAA Flammability Tests 14 CFR 25.853 (a) Appendix F, Part I, (a)(1)(i)-60 second vertical burn
14 CFR 25.853 (a) Appendix F, Part I, (a)(1)(ii)-12 second vertical burn
14 CFR 25.852 (a) Appendix F, Part I, (a)(1)(iv)-horizontal burn
14 CFR 25.853 (a) Appendix F, Part I, (a)(2)(ii)-45 degree burn Heat Release 14 CFR 25.853(d), Amendment 25-83, Appendix F, Part IV. Smoke Density 14 CFR 25.853(d), Amendment 25-83, Appendix F, Part V.
Frag Bag Bomb Containment System LAST® Armor has also developed a low-cost, highly deployable bomb containment system. This system is designed to contain the fragments and mitigate the blast over pressure from a typical 2-in. diameter, 8 in. long pipe bomb charged with over 1 pound of Pyrodex® propellant.
The system weighs less than 25 pounds and can be used by public safety, private security, postal service and corporate mail room personnel. It is fitted with a number of grab points so that it can be opened, loaded, closed and transported by a bomb stick or remote manipulator. It can also be used to improve safety in routine transport of small pyrotechnics such as detonator caps and detcord.
Spall Liners -- An Innovative Addition to the Product Line LAST Armor's spall liners can be used to supplement vehicle A Kit armor for increased protection against fragments. Marines and soldiers can install the liners in less than an hour to help stay ahead of emerging threats. Blast Mitigating Seat The new Blast Mitigating Seat features an innovative damping system to mitigate the effects of mine and IED blasts and is capable of providing occupant protection in a wide range of vehicles. Tests have shown that the seat can reduce the level of the load felt by an occupant's spine and pelvis from 1800 to less than 20 g's. The seat is also designed for rapid egress. RPG Defeat Nets Our new RPG Net system is capable of providing protection on a wide range of tactical and lightly armored vehicles. It uses a net design that test results have shown match or exceed competitor bar armor solutions while adding none of the weight of those solutions. Protection can be provided from all angles (including the roof). To contact LAST® Armor, call +1.888.773.5725.
